Tennis String Selection Guide4 Types of String:

Synthetic Gut [SYN] (Solinco Syn Gut, Wilson Syn Gut)
Multifilament [MLT] (Solinco MLT)
Natural Gut [NAT]
Polyester [POLY] (Wilson Revolve, Solinco Poly Hyper-G, Solinco Poly Tour Bite Soft).

String selection is heavily influenced by the player's swing speed and swing style.
For example, does the player have a shorter, more compact swing or do they have a longer,
more powerful swing speed where they are swinging with all of their energy with confidence that
the ball will stay in the court.

SYNTHETIC GUT [SYN]:
All beginner players and most players up to 3.0 level will usually fall into this category. Synthetic
Gut strings hold tension well (less restringing!), provide a good, neutral starting point for players
with a shorter, compact swing. Recommended restringing is usually after around 30-40 hours of
play time. Great low cost option for players of all levels. Recommended tension usually between 50-56 LBS .

MULTIFILAMENT [MLT]:
For players of all levels, multifilament string provides a softer hitting surface, allowing the player
for more "feel" of the ball. It is also considered arm-friendly for players with elbow or wrist
soreness. This type of string holds tension well (less restringing!), usually good for around 30
hours of play time. Budget multifilaments such as Wilson Sensation will perform similarly to
Synthetic Gut string but feel softer. Higher end multifilaments such as Wilson NXT or Tecnifibre
NRG will perform better with less string repositioning for the more developed player with a
longer swing. Great for players of all levels. Recommended tension between 50-56 LBS.

NATURAL GUT [NAT]:
The most expensive option due to its long production process, Natural Gut strings are made
from the intestines of cows. They are the most arm-friendly string available, and are the best
strings for long term tension maintenance. Recommended tension 48-56 LBS .

POLYESTER [POLY]:
These extremely stiff strings are used on the professional tour due to their ability to snap into
place after making ball contact. The composition is essentially a hard plastic material and
therefore are not recommended for a player with arm soreness or injury concern. Poly strings
lose tension very quickly, only good for about 12-15 hours of play, causing a player to need to
restring more often. Should only be used by high intermediate to advanced players with a
longer, powerful stroke . Beginners up to 3.0 level will likely not swing powerfully enough to
"bend or move" these very stiff strings therefore not obtaining any benefit from them.
Manufacturers recommend a tension of at least 10 percent less if coming from synthetic gut or
multifilament. Recommended tension 45-52 lbs .

*In general, most recreational players should restring their racquet at a minimum of 2 times per
year, or more depending on how often they play.

Tension Selection: lower tension - more ball pocketing and feel, power. Higher tension-less feel, lower trajectory, less power.
